Introduction to Taylor’s SLG Awards Ceremony
The biannual Taylor’s School of Law and Governance Awards Ceremony has long been a cherished tradition, honouring the outstanding academic achievements of students from both the March and August intakes. This year, the ceremony shines the spotlight on the September cohort, celebrating their relentless dedication and excellence in their law studies.
Opening Ceremony
Kicking off the ceremony with enthusiasm, emcees Camy and Kareena warmly welcomed everyone before introducing Associate Professor Dr. Harmahinder Singh, Head of the School of Law and Governance. Dr. Singh’s address was filled with praise for the students' diligence and resilience, setting the tone for the ceremony. Adding to the excitement, keynote speaker Datuk N. Chandran, Senior Consultant at Albar & Partners and registered arbitrator for the Asian Arbitration Centre, delivered an inspiring and insightful speech, emphasising the importance of perseverance and the power of never giving up.
Year 1 Book Prize Awardees
As the event unfolded, the highly anticipated distribution of book prizes began, recognizing the top performers from each module. The spotlight first turned to the Year 1 September 2023 cohort. Chloe Lim Xuan Bei distinguished herself as the top scorer in both Contract Law and English Constitutional & Administrative Law. Following closely, Kareena Krisha Nadarajah secured the top spot in Legal Skills & Methods. The accolades continued with Deborah Ong Jie En, who swept awards for Law of Tort, Malaysian Legal System, and English Legal System, earning her the title of Best Overall Performer for Year 1.
Year 2 Book Prize Awardees
The excitement carried over to the Year 2 August 2022 cohort. Nurul Adriana Hadirah and Binti Mohd Haslin were honoured for being the top scorers in the Mooting module, but the undeniable star was Janelle Ong Eu Yin. Janelle took home the highest scores in Criminal Law, English Land Law, Malaysian Constitutional & Administrative Law, and Public International Law, securing her position as the Best Overall Performer for Year 2.
Year 3 Book Prize Awardees
As the ceremony continued, the spotlight shifted to the Year 3 August 2021 cohort. Lee Xing Hui Adriana secured the highest score in Company Law, while Mercy Tan Chi Ying triumphed in Equity & Trusts. Low Kah Lam earned the top spot in Family Law, and Kevin Jeremy Liew Xian Ren shone in Malaysian Land Law, rounding off his achievements with the title of Best Overall Performer for Year 3.
Extraordinary Achievements Outside Academics
Beyond academic excellence, the ceremony also paid tribute to leadership and involvement in law-related societies and competitions. Certificates of recognition were awarded to those who held key roles in various student bodies. Muhammad Radzin Bin Mohamed Rafik, alongside Ng U and their dedicated team, was lauded for their work with Taylor’s Law Society. Lee Xing Hui Adriana, Ivy Liew Xin Yi, and their team were recognized for their tireless efforts in the Mooting Society, while Nataly Nadia Binti Abdul Razak and Kelly Siow Hui Xin, leading one of the local chapters of Asian Law Students' Association (ALSA), ALSA Taylor’s University, were celebrated for enhancing student engagement and learning experiences. Sonia Arania A/P Chandrakumar and Camy Hani Shafiq Chan, co-leaders of the Legal Aid & Street Law Programme, were honoured for their commitment to service, while Michelle Lee Shu Ling, Elaine Chee Yi Ting, and their team received accolades for elevating Taylor’s Lexicon Editorial Board. The editors of CRELDA were also recognized for their stellar contributions during their term.
Mooter Shines
On the competition front, individual achievements were also acknowledged. Misha Madinah Binti Salehuddin was celebrated as the champion of the Policy Pitching Competition 2024, and, together with Ng U and Sonia Arania A/P Chandrakumar, she also took home the title of champion for the Young Leaders Legal Summit 2024. Ng U, Muhammad Radzin Bin Mohamed Rafik, and Michelle Lee Shu Ling were praised for their outstanding performance in the Legal Reform Competition 2024, where they advanced to the final round with the highest scores from the judges. Additional accolades went to students who participated in mooting competitions, recognizing their commitment to honing their legal skills.
Closing of SLG Awards Ceremony September 2024 This year’s Taylor’s School of Law and Governance Awards Ceremony was more than just a celebration of academic excellence—it was a vibrant tribute to leadership, teamwork, and the shared passion for the legal field. It also served as a great reminder to stay well-rounded, balancing hard work in academics with the fun and growth that come from engaging in extracurricular activities.
